Reiki is an energy therapy with its roots in Japan. It is a nonintrusive method of healing that works with Chi or Ki – the energy system that circulates within the body. When the flow of “Universal Life Force Energy” within someone is weakened, blocked, or disrupted in any way, emotional or health problems tend to happen. Reiki works to rebalance the body’s energy system on all levels of being.
The goal of Reiki is to balance the energy systems of the body, which in turn strengthens the body to assist in dealing with physical and emotional imbalances. Both chronic and acute challenges can be addressed using Reiki. Reiki is especially helpful in cases where massage is too stimulating to the body or the client is too frail.

What conditions would benefit from Reiki?
Reiki can be used for any and every challenge: physical, emotional, mental, etc. Some of the conditions that react favorably to regular Reiki sessions are:
- Cancer symptoms
- Pre and Post Surgery
- All terminal illnesses
- Progressive Arthritis
- Compliments conventional treatments, including radiation and
- Encourages the body’s release of toxins
**Individual healing response may vary, although people who are addressing a specific issue usually experience positive results in a shorter period of time with a series of weekly or twice-weekly sessions. (Traditionally in Japan, people received Reiki treatment daily until their issue was resolved or alleviated!)
What is a Reiki session like?
After a thorough intake process you will be relaxed on a massage table, fully clothed. Other adjustments can be made to accommodate health issues or disabilities.
A series of hand positions, applied gently on or just above areas of the body, are used to sense areas of imbalance and help stimulate the body’s self-correcting mechanisms. A quiet, deeply relaxed state is encouraged for restorative healing.
The hand positions consist of locations on the head, neck, chest, stomach, back, and legs. No pressure is applied to the body. Every individual reacts differently to a Reiki session. Some people experience warmth at the hand placements. Some fall asleep during the session. The effects felt vary depending on the state of health: very relaxed, heightened energy, more restful sleep, decrease in pain states, decreased stress levels.
Regardless of the differences, everyone is very relaxed. You may feel tired afterwards, or some people have high levels of energy. Listen to your body and give it what it needs.
Reiki treatment is not a substitute for qualified medical care, but can safely be used in conjunction with medical or therapeutic treatment.
Has there been any research in the field of Reiki?
Medical research has focused upon verifying Reiki’s benefits and not how it works. One study showed a “highly significant reduction in pain”, including Cancer pain, following Reiki. Another study cited improvement in immune and nervous system functioning and increased mobility in patients with conditions such as Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and MS.
Independent research by Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. John Zimmerman during the 1980's investigated what happens whilst people practice therapies like Reiki. They found that not only do the brain wave patterns of prac titioner and receiver become synchronised in the alpha state, characteristic of deep relaxation and meditation, but they pulse in unison with the earth's magnetic field, known as the Schuman Resonance. During these moments, the biomagnetic field of the practitioners' hands is at least 1000 times greater than normal, and not as a result of internal body current.
